FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Is the summer co-op a DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) co-op?
No. While we are partially subsidized by DPR, we are an independent, parent-led organization.
2. Why does the website say that some information may change between February and March 2020?
We are dependent on DPR on certain aspects of the co-op formation, which takes time to finalize between our group and DPR, including tuition and dates/time of operation. Sometimes the information we get cuts close to vital enrollment period. As such, we ask that interested families give us some flexibility to finalize our terms with DPR.
3. Why is your tuition so low?
We do not have a big overhead like most organizations. In particular, we do not own our facility which saves us a lot of money. Instead, we pay a fee to DPR, which DPR partially subsidizes, for the use of their recreation center classrooms. Among others, this enables us to pass down the saving to our members.
4. How much is the tuition?
The tuition is $1,350 for all nine weeks of the summer (Monday, June 22 to Friday, August 21).
5. Why are some summer co-op locations half-days instead of full-days?
At some locations, our classes must end at 12 PM because we share the use of the classroom with DPR summer camps. When our co-op ends at 12 PM, DPR camps begin. At the locations where we offer full-day programs, we have exclusive use of the classroom. Hence, we are able to offer full-day programs there.
6. Do children have time to nap during the co-op hours?
At the full-day program ending at 3 PM, children do nap for one hour. At the half-day cites, because the days end at 12 PM, naps are not offered.
7. Do parents need to pass a background check before serving their duty days at the summer co-op?
Yes, every parent and other caregiver serving duty days on behalf of any parent must pass a background check.
8. Do you have before and aftercare?
No.
9. How many duty days do parents serve during the summer?
It varies depending on the size of the summer co-op. But generally, it ranges from 6 to 9 duty days.
10. When do parents work their duty days?
Because families often go on vacations during the summer, parents have flexibility in when they serve their duty days. For instance, some families frontload (or backload) all their duty days at the beginning (or end) of the summer so that they don't have to worry about their duty days for the rest of the summer. For others, they prefer to spread out their duty days evenly throughout the summer.
